RACE PADDLE SESSIONS
  • Open to paddlers interested in high competition Dragon Boat racing
  • Sessions available Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings
  • Instruction: Stroke Technique, synchronicity, endurance, land-based training off the boat
  • Rolling mock races may be used without the race starts
  • Race starts / finishes will be introduced in final stages of race preparation
  • At least one coach available per boat
  • Based on Best Practices, coaches recommend racing paddlers prioritize and focus on scheduled Monday – Wednesday – Saturday practices with occasional Endurance paddles, to prevent over-training and repetitive-use injuries. It is also a highly recommended training protocol among elite racers, that paddlers build a day or two for recovery into their practice schedule.
RACER EXPECTATIONS

Community Racer Expectations

  • Accountable – member is committed to attending paddlng sessions 2x/wk. for 4 weeks prior to the race date.
  • Training – Paddlers prepared for training to race 200 and 250 meter races.
  • Coachable – member must be committed to perfecting their technique, refining their synchronicity, improving their endurance, planning land-based training when off the water, planning recovery days.
  • Race Fees – It is the responsiblity of the racer to pay full race fees by the published due date and to be committed to travel expenses including lodging and meals. 

 

ENDURANCE PADDLES
  • Open to all paddlers
  • One 90 – minute sessions per week on Thursday organized by sweep.
  • In order to maintain interest, we will be exploring different parts of the lake.
  • Focus on building fitness through strength, endurance, and cardiovascular workouts, along with building teammate camaraderie.
  • The sweep is in charge of the boat.
  • If a coach is in attendance, they are a paddler, but may provide guidance to individual paddlers when necessary.

How Do I Join a Team?
  • Racers interested in participating should sign up when the Insta Team event is created and be prepared for the committement to the team.
  • Tellico Heat will send as many boats as possible  based on the interest of the club members.
  • Coaches will divide participants among the boats based on interest, needs of the boats, paddlers selected side (port or starboard), weight distribution, and any other factors necessary to provide the greatest opportunities for success.

PADDLER TIPS

As the racing season kicks off, it’s essential to stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet to ensure peak performance. Remember to review the race schedule and arrive early to familiarize yourself with the venue. Consistent practice and teamwork are key to success, so keep communication open with your coaches and teammates. Lastly, don’t forget to enjoy the camaraderie and spirit of the competition!

ARE YOU READY TO RACE?

Here are a few things that you may want to think of to make sure you are race ready:

RACE PREP

  • Increase complex carbohydrate intake 3 days prior (rice, pasta, potatoes, whole grains)
  • Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep a night 2-3 nights before
  • Take rest days 2 days prior to race day
  • 3-5 days prior drink plenty of liquid (90-120 oz/day). This can include water, fruits/vegetables, hydration drinks (Urine should be clear or pale yellow) – Add electrolytes if it is hot or humid. Limit the intake of caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea, or soda as they can be dehydrating.
  • Sip water consistently throughout the day of the race

PACKING FOR THE RACE

Here are some suggestions of things to pack for the race

  • Team Race Shirt*
  • Race shoes* (many festivals require close toed shoes NOT flip flops)

Pretty Important

  • Water bottle(s) – bring extra water and plan to carry it with you all day except during the race. Some festivals provide extra water for participants but other do not.
  • Snacks (granola bars, protein bars, peanut butter, crackers, oranges, jerky etc)
  • Seat Saddle or cushion
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses (with retainer strap)
  • Gloves

For Your Comfort

  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray
  • Towel
  • Chair
  • Neck fan or personal fan
  • Cooling towel or scarf
  • Dry Clothes/sweatshirt
