”What better environment to enjoy life here in Tellico Village, than being on our beautiful lake, while we enjoy friendships and get a great work-out. This is one of the best things I have done since moving to Tellico Village.”
“I joined to race but I gained so much more in the process physically and mentally.”

I don't know but I've been told
Dragon Boat's for young and old
We work hard and in the heat
We don't know the word defeat
Paddles up we know our fate
Drive those legs and hips rotate
Stronger, deeper coaches say

What I Love About Dragon Boat
“People ask me why I like dragon boat. I could say many things, such as being on
the water, the competition, camaraderie, etc. But what I really love about dragon boating is the synchronicity. I can’t think of any other sport that requires exact synchronicity to be successful other than synchronized swimming. Baseball, football, soccer, track… are all team sports, however, each athlete has a particular job and individual effort makes the team strong. In the dragon boat,
the “job” of each paddler is to be in synch. It takes every paddler to do their best; to reach far enough, pull hard enough and exit quickly enough for the next stroke all in time with the 19 other paddlers. One variation can change the outcome of that practice and/or race. Once someone gets the stroke, “gets it”, it is a graceful, elongated, continuous movement. There is nothing prettier than to watch a boat full of people that “get it” and their “swing” is all in synch. The paddles enter the water at the same time, the paddles pull back at the same time, and they leave the water at the same time finally ending in the “swing”;
paddles are flared out and skim over the water to be positioned for the next
stroke. It’s harmonious and a splash of bright colors only to disappear into the
water for the next stroke. When the whole boat “gets it” it’s a beautiful thing.”

About Tellico Heat Dragon Boat Club
- Tellico Heat Dragon Boat Club [“THDBC”] was founded in 2015.
- In 2016 a small but dedicated group embraced the sport and with patience and commitment sustained the Club.
- Like minded people were attracted to dragon boat as an additional fitness opportunity that added a competition component.
- A core group of leadership built their expertise as paddlers and coaches by attending coaching class(s), training camps and using the wealth of information available on all facets of the sport.
- As a result of their passion, THDBC attracted 35 new members in 2023 and a similar number in 2024.
- For each of the last two years THDBC has participated in four competitions, or Festivals, sponsored by non-profits organizations. THDBC donated a combined $8,000 and $6,050 for 2023 and 2024 respectively for causes such as Harmony House Domestic Violence Shelter, Breast Cancer Awareness, Cumberland River Pact and Knox Area Rescue Mission. The 2024 total was impacted by the cancellation of Lake James Festival after the devastation of Hurricane Helene.
- The men and women of THDBC welcome the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful lake and to work toward personal fitness and team competition goals while continually developing their skills unique to the sport of dragon boat.
- Whether a member chooses to compete or not, wonderful camaraderie is built by participating in all levels of learning and fitness sessions, filling in on competition practices or working on a spot for festival competitions.
